Soppy Films?

Thursday 23rd February 2006

As a rule I do not cry in movies. No matter how sentimental or soppy (and I shudder at the thought) they are, at the end of the day they are just stories. Having just said this, I have to admit that I cried in Pride and Prejudice. [Whatever you do: do not stop reading and do not quote this out of context!]

The book is hard going (though probably quite good once you get the hang of the style), the BBC production is five hours (good but five hours) but the film is great! I thought that the parents were strange, the cousin was very amusingly pretentious, the sisters were hyper-giggly — girls, what do you expect? — and overall it wasn't too soppy! The soppiest bit is actually an extra, the 'alternative US ending'. For some reason we were all expecting a wedding or (jokingly) some guns and explosions but what we got was a lot different... here is the outline put slightly more bluntly. There is a beautiful romantic setting by the lake and soppy Lizzie says 'You can only call me Mrs. Darcy when you are really, really happy.' Soppy Mr. Darcey looks deep into her eyes etc and replies 'Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy... Mrs. Darcy...' Aaaaaaah! We get the point! It is just so hilarious, you have to see it and if you ever get the chance, then do. I was crying with laughter.
