God's Wordle

Monday 30th March 2009

Wordle. It's awesome. Here's the entire Bible (ESV)

You can really see the shift of focus between the Old Testament ...

... and the New Testament

It's also really interesting on smaller chunks. Here's the gospels

And Psalms 118 and 119

Beautiful Babies

Monday 16th March 2009

Day 1 The cell with the genetic instructions from the Mum and the Dad divides into two then four then eight, and on and on.

18 Days A minature heart is forming. Soon, eyes will begin to appear.

24 Days The heart begins to beat.

30 Days The child has grown 10,000 times its original size to 1/4" long. Blood is flowing in the baby's veins but stays separate from the mother's blood.

42 Days The skeleton is formed. The brain coordinates the movement of muscles and organs and reflex responses have begun.

43 Days Brain waves can be recorded.

7 Weeks Lips are sensitive to touch and ears may resemble family patterns.

10 Weeks The whole body is sensitive to touch. The child squints, swallows, puckers up their brow and frowns.

12 Weeks The baby can kick, turn feet, open the mouth, make a fist, and more.

4 Months The child can grasp with hands, swim and turn somersaults

6 Months Hair starts to grow. Weight is about 22oz. babies botn at the age have survived.

7 Months Eyelids open and close, eyes look around. Hands grip strongly. Mother's voice can be heard and recognized.

8 Months Weight is over 2lbs and it's getting a bit tight.

9 Months Born! 255 - 275 days after conception. Around 41 out of the 45 generations of cell divisions that will happen throughout the child's entire life have already take place.

Most abortion occours between 7 and 12 weeks and is completly legally. Some people claim that a 12 week old child is not a human being, it's only a "foetus", which means that abortion is not murder. That is a cruel lie which costs hundreds of thousands defenceless lives every year. A baby is a human whether it is on the outside or the inside. How can you claim otherwise? God talks about knowing us before he formed us in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5). He didn't 'know us before we popped out'. God sees us as human even whilst we're in Mum's tum. Birth is sometimes called the 'miracle of life'. Miracles should be considered with awe. Let's remind ourself how incredible new life is.

Characteristics of an Effective Christian

Tuesday 10th March 2009

an amusing imageI've just got back from a Young Life Leadership Training weekend. It was awesome to meet up with like-minded believers and to consider how we can practically live our lives for Jesus. We crammed 6 sessions into one day which meant some good intense time in the Word. Hugh Martin from Ireland gave most of the talks. They were all helpful and all delivered in that wonderful Irish accent.

One particular highlight was How to Multiply Your Life. Not about relationships — as some of though — but on being fruitful, a phrase which gets thrown about far too much and thought about far too little. There's fruit produced in us and fruit produced through us. We are primarily responsable for the fruit produced in us. Without God, we can't produce fruit. With God, we can. We must remain in Him by obeying His commands. That's the purpose He chose us for: to produce fruit that will last. (John 15:1-17).

Have you got what it takes?

In another talk we look at some incidents in the life of Barnabus' which bring out his charcter. What do I need to be like to be effective in God's kingdom? These really challenged me. Ask yourself the same questions.

He was an encouragement. He was called Joseph but nickname Barnabus which means son of encouragement (Acts 4:36). Am I an encourager? Or would 'fault-finder' be a better nickname for me?

He was sacrificial (Acts 4:37). He sold his land and gave all the money to the apostles. What can I give for the sake of the gospel?

He got people involved (Acts 9:27, Acts 12:25). Barny was the one who first introduced Paul to the believers, who at the time were terrifed of him. He also took John-Mark on a mission. Do I look out for other people and try to help them in their kingdom work?

He was happy when he saw God work (Acts 11:23). Do I see God's grace in other people's lives and do I rejoice when I see it?

He exhorted others in their walk with God (Acts 11:23, Acts 13:43). Do I help to give my brothers and sisters the motivation they need? Yes, it is worth carry on! Keep going!

He was full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 11:24) and as a result lots of people were brought to the Lord. Am I making my life suitable to be Spirit-filled? Am I being selfish with the Spirit or using it for God's glory?

He taught Christians (Acts 11:23) for a whole year of his life. Am I willing to share the grace which God is giving me? Do I share it?

He fasted and prayed (Acts 13:2-3) and it was when he was fasting that the Holy Spirit set them apart for a mission. Is fasting a lost discipline? Am I spending time alone with God, focused on Him and His will?

He suffered without giving up (Acts 14:20). Riots, mobs and a stoning were not enough to stop Barny living for the Lord. Am I a comfortable Christian? Does it cost me anything? If not, what am I doing wrong?

He wasn't perfect (Acts 15:39). He was not a super-disciple-dude. He fell out with Paul and they split up. Take care! Where do I need to guard against division?
